![]() Lee has stated that the character of Dill is based on young Truman Capote, a well-known Southern writer and childhood friend. Scout and Jem meet and befriend seven-year-old Dill Harris, a boy who has arrived in Maycomb to stay with his aunt for the summer. Scout and her brother Jem are raised by their father and by Calpurnia, an African-American housekeeper who works for the family. ![]() The character of Atticus Finch, Scout's father, was based on Lee's own father, a liberal Alabama lawyer and statesman who frequently defended African Americans within the racially prejudiced Southern legal system. ![]() To Kill a Mockingbird is set in the small, rural town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the early 1930s. It was adapted to film in 1962 as a major motion picture starring Gregory Peck. To Kill a Mockingbird has endured as a mainstay on high school and college reading lists. The heroic character of Atticus Finch has been held up as a role model of moral virtue and impeccable character for lawyers to emulate. Lee's first and only novel, To Kill a Mockingbird was published during the Civil Rights movement and was hailed as an exposé of Southern racist society. In the three years surrounding the trial, Scout and her older brother, Jem, witness the unjust consequences of prejudice and hate while at the same time witnessing the values of courage and integrity through their father's example. Recalling her experiences as a six-year-old from an adult perspective, Jean Louise Finch, nicknamed "Scout," describes the circumstances involving her widowed father, Atticus, and his legal defense of Tom Robinson, a local black man falsely accused of raping a white woman. Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird has remained enormously popular since its publication in 1960.

The natural human-human behavior can be regarded as the gold-standard for system performance and robustness (Huang and Mutlu, 2012) and thus, the analysis of natural behavior is required for developing a model of social interaction. Using either handcrafted models for distinguishing a person who aims at initiating an interaction from people who do not wish to interact and/or deriving models from lab data, did not work as intended in the real world (Michalowski et al., 2006 Bohus and Horvitz, 2009a). These signals could be very subtle, e.g., if a customer sits at the bar and decides to order another drink, s/he might not get up or move to another location. Thus, the system should not only detect the right signals, but also avoid false alarms. On the other hand, inviting customers to place an order if they had no intention to do so is annoying for those customers. Detecting customers who wish to order is crucial because failing to do so is fatal for the interaction as a whole. This is complicated by the fact that bars are often dimly-lit and noisy environments with multiple customers. ![]() ![]() In the bar scenario, one of the most difficult challenges is to distinguish between customers who are intending to place an order and those who are not. We conclude that (a) these two easily recognizable actions are sufficient for recognizing the intention of customers to initiate a service interaction, but other actions such as gestures and speech were not necessary, and (b) the use of reaction time experiments using natural materials is feasible and provides ecologically valid results.įor enabling users to interact intuitively with a robotic agent, the robot system has to be able to identify and to respond to social signals appropriately. Finally, a signal detection analysis revealed that ignoring a potential order is deemed worse than erroneously inviting customers to order. The participants also showed a strong agreement about when these cues occurred in the videos. Both signals were necessary and, when occurring together, sufficient. The results revealed that bar staff responded to a set of two non-verbal signals: first, customers position themselves directly at the bar counter and, secondly, they look at a member of staff. Two experiments using snapshots and short video sequences then tested the validity of these hypothesized candidate signals. ![]() These recordings were used to generate initial hypotheses about the signals customers produce when bidding for the attention of bar staff. In order to study which signals customers use to initiate a service interaction in a bar, we recorded real-life customer-staff interactions in several German bars. Thus, a bartending robot has to be able to distinguish between customers intending to order, chatting with friends or just passing by. This detection is particularly challenging in a noisy environment with multiple customers. Detecting whether a customer would like to order is essential for the service encounter to succeed. Enabling a bartending robot to serve customers is particularly challenging as the system has to recognize the social signals produced by customers and respond appropriately. ![]() Recognizing the intention of others is important in all social interactions, especially in the service domain. ![]() And a year later, Audible made it possible to download books onto desktop computers.Īs audiobooks have become more popular, there have been countless debates over the best applications and ways to digest the medium. ![]() Waldenbooks installed “audio centers” in their bookstores and the publishing houses Random House, Warner Publishing and Simon & Schuster opened audio publishing divisions.īy 1994, the term “audiobook” had become an industry standard. And it is not traditional acting in any sense. Added to this perfect mélange – which truly generates a “danger-around-every-corner” vibe that may challenge your determination to be bold – is the acting itself. You are essentially transported to the 1930s amidst the garbled warbling of the Ink Spots and Glenn Miller floating in and out of rooms, beckoning you to follow the action. As they will tell you, fortune favors the bold.īesides the story of Macbeth which creates the solid foundation of this show, Sleep No More leans into the eeriness of the Shakespearean story by reframing it, not in a Scottish castle, but in a luxury hotel in the 1930s. Would you take the shotglass? The more risks you take, the more interesting your night will become. But Sleep No More, for the curious spectator, is better defined in the choices you make between the action. Three witches, writhing and dancing and seducing, wreaking havoc together and apart. You can pick out other characters if you know the story well enough. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth stalk the eerie hallways, muttering to themselves and sometimes covered in blood. In a broad sense, Sleep No More is a retelling of Macbeth. This one takes the shotglass, hesitates, and then drains it. He offers it to another spectator, watching her carefully. In response, he offers her a shotglass filled with an unidentified liquid. A spectator pulls the card that he is looking for. In one of the many, many rooms, at a bar made entirely of cardboard and lit only by a dim lamp, a man is silently offering a deck of cards to the spectators on the other side of the bar. It’s one of the first things you must adapt to if you are to make your way in the world that is Sleep No More. In any case, I’m a fan.The McKittrick Hotel is dark. Not sure…ģ) The very end of the show, which I found powerful and shocking the first time, was played much safer in last night’s performance, and it just did not have the same effect. I’m not sure the reason for this except that I thought perhaps some of the detail/objects were removed from the rooms to prevent pilfering, and the lights were turned down so the rooms wouldn’t look bare. I’m thinking of the Macbeth bedroom and the sanatorium room with the cots. I do think the experience is more powerful/intense if you go it alone.Ģ) Certain rooms/scenes were so dark that you could barely see what was going on. This could have been because they were running late with getting everyone in due to checking everyone’s Covid tests and vaccination cards. ![]() ![]() But some things about the show had also changed from the pre-Covid era.ġ) They didn’t try to separate couples/groups, and they didn’t have you hang out in the bar at the beginning. I had such FOMO the first time that I couldn’t wait to go back to see those scenes I heard about but missed (including the techno party scene). But the most intriguing part of it is that there’s always something else to explore. The physicality of the acting/movement is impressive, and somehow the actors manage to maneuver around the audience. Sleep no More is completely transporting (and creepy). Last night I returned for a second time, seeing the newly reopened and slightly revised version of the show. I attended Sleep No More for the first time in early 2020–right before it was shut down due to Covid. ![]() If you get a gun characterized by its high damage output with an affix that reduces its damage, don’t write off the weapon entirely just yet, see if you can find one with a more optimal setup.įor many players this information may not be usable, but it’s great that Gearbox decided to implement a feature that is the primary reason people turned to a third party program they otherwise had no intention of using in the past, cutting out the middle man for people that didn’t actually want to mod save files.
